The Calculation Engine
Many traditional expense splitters fail because they split bills flatly or distribute taxes and tips incorrectly. BillSplitter's core engine uses a proportional distribution algorithm for its restaurant bill split calculator mode.
By analyzing each member's base consumption (item subtotal), we calculate their exact percentage contribution to the meal. This ratio is then used to distribute shared overheads—such as taxes, tips, and delivery fees—making it a mathematically fair bill split calculator.
Local-First Privacy
We believe your spending habits and personal details belong to you. BillSplitter is designed to work entirely client-side. Every image upload, scanned item, list of friends, and payment instruction is processed inside your local browser sandbox.
We do not run backend databases, track analytics cookies, or transmit receipt files. Your session state is safely persisted in your browser's local storage cache, meaning you can reload the page or even work offline without losing your progress.
OCR Technology
To speed up inputting data, we integrated a browser-based optical character recognition (OCR) engine powered by Tesseract.js. When you capture a camera photo of a receipt or upload a file, the parser identifies line items, description keywords, and prices.
The OCR parser compiles these details directly into an import screen where you can assign them. There is no external cloud API processing the image—everything happens on your device.
